    White oak, quarter sawn was used for making barrels { cooperage} because the cellular structure is water proof. Red oak has hollow cells , big difference.

    Hi. Congrats for this awesome Channel. I'm loving it. Hey,,, Which finish would you recommend for wood-resin rings jewelery? You know people, we all just wash our hands wearing our rings. We don't take it off before. But these rings I'm making are wood. How would you finish - protect the rings? 😊 Thanks

    The sale of denatured alcohol in California has been criminalized. Any store owner that sells denatured alcohol in California will be sent to prison, that's how bad it's getting in California.

    As a homeowner in central Illinois, I really liked the white oak habit of dropping its fall leaves in a week or two. Yard cleanup was not a problem. Currently, as a homeowner in central Wisconsin our red oak drops previous season leaves every month of the year. Yard looks crappy all year.

    I think you down played the negatives of white oak. While i agree it is heavier and denser, it is also more brittle. I can shoot staples into r| oak without issue. When using white oak, i need to be more cognizant of the grain and distance from the staple to the edge of the wood. Red Oak is more forgiving of a bad placed nail or staple. I generally prefer red oak over white oak for our custom product shop. White oak also tends to eat more bits on our cnc routers than red oak or poplar.

    Very thorough video showing lots of details and workmanship! The only thing I can add is to use a Tack Cloth to remove all dust after sanding (didn't see that in video). And I've used Howards stuff -- great product but never tried it on new work. Good ideaa!

    I make my shellac from flakes, I build layers with about 7 coats of shellac, they dry in only a few minutes with a 2 pound cut. Then 3 coats of spray lacquer. That's what I was taught in HS over 30 years ago. It seems to work pretty well.I just recently started woodworking again since becoming disabled a few years ago. I've only did some minor home repair/construction type stuff since HS. I like 100% tung oil for cutting boards with purple heart in them since it's food safe.

    You are afraid of that blade. It only goes down so it can only pull downward. Unlike a tablesaw or chopsaw it can't throw things at you or pull your hand in. Unsupported cuts can slap the table startlingly fast which can hurt but are obvious and preventable.

    Khaya senegalensis grows fast, easily, and is drought resistant. Honduras mahogany is the real one, right? Mine grows fast too, but many had shoot borer pests. When i worked in a wood factory mahogany was one of the few hardwoods, i wonder if it was Khaya or S. macrophylla. I also wonder why i got the impression that teak is so expensive. Teak grows 5 meters tall within 6 months. Merbau very slowly.

I want to build a chair out of cherry and finish it in shellac, but I want to see if I need to put a little bit of a red aniline dye in my shellac to get that really red wine, red color I’m looking for.

    The bark on white oak is significantly different from red oak, where it's about 3 times thicker and you can even peel it off in strips. When you take off the bark it exposes the extremely white outer layer of the wood. Touch it with bare hands and it'll turn your skin purple.

  • @TomKaren94
    @TomKaren94 27 днів тому

    You talked about the cosmetics but not the real structural difference. The pores in red oak are open but in white oak they are filled with resin making it denser, heavier and much more impervious to water.
